Marketing that moves product through contractors

Where we work

Marketing suppliers to Prince Edward Island contractors

PEI is a small, relationship-driven contractor market where heat pumps already lead, rebate programs have shifted, and reputation spreads quickly between trades.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Prince Edward Island is the smallest provincial market in Canada and one of the most relationship-driven. Most contractor buying runs through Charlottetown and Summerside, with Stratford and Cornwall close by and rural accounts spread across the rest of the Island. Contractors know each other, word travels quickly, and a supplier's reputation at the counter matters as much as any campaign.

TradeAgency.ca markets and advises suppliers, distributors and manufacturers. We stay on the supplier side; as a non-contractor, we never install, repair or service anything on the Island.

The PEI contractor buyer

On the regulatory side, PEI's Inspection Services oversee electrical, plumbing, propane, elevator and pressure-vessel work. Several contractor licences define your buyers:

  • plumbing companies holding a PEI Plumbing Contractor's Licence
  • firms doing boiler and pressure vessel work under a Mechanical Contractor Licence, on a cycle ending December 31, 2027
  • propane technicians with an LP Gas Personnel Licence
  • electrical contractors and electricians

A licence renewal cycle is a natural moment for supplier outreach, such as updated product training or a refreshed trade account offer. We link regulators for context; compliance questions go to the province.

Heat pumps already lead

Statistics Canada shows that heat pumps were the primary heating system in 36% of PEI households in 2023, the highest share of any province. Oil was the main energy source in 28% of homes, electricity in 18% and wood in 8%.

For a supplier's catalogue, that suggests:

  • deep heat pump content, including accessories, line sets, controls and replacement parts for an ageing installed base
  • oil equipment and parts pages for the homes that still rely on it
  • backup heating pages, since many homes pair a heat pump with oil or wood

Programs have shifted

As of October 2026, PEI's program landscape had changed sharply. The efficiencyPEI residential heat pump equipment rebates ended April 15, 2026, though purchases made in the prior year may still apply within one year of purchase. The free heat pump program page said applications were closed.

The province did sign a federal Greener Homes Affordability agreement in June 2026 to expand free insulation for income-qualified homeowners. Insulation and building-envelope suppliers should watch for intake details.

For heat pump suppliers, the job now is to remove outdated rebate claims, explain the change to contractors plainly and prepare for the federal National Heat Pump Rebate, announced in October 2026 for a 2027 launch. Always tell contractors to confirm with the administrator. Our launch and rebate campaigns handle this kind of reset.

Seasons on the Island

The Gulf of St. Lawrence moderates PEI's winters, but they are still cold and snowy. Install work runs from spring through autumn, and ferry and bridge logistics affect stocking.

  • Spring: contractor training and stock planning for install season.
  • Summer and autumn: availability messaging and delivery schedules.
  • Winter: parts and service support for existing heat pumps and oil systems.

Word of mouth in a small market

On PEI, one counter experience can travel across the Island within a week. That cuts both ways: a supplier with honest stock information and quick answers gets talked up, and one with stale rebate pages gets talked about. So the marketing has to match reality. We focus on accurate availability, plain-language product pages and fast replies by phone, text and email, because those are what contractors mention to each other.

Training events also work well here. A spring session on heat pump commissioning or line-set best practice can bring a large share of the Island's installers into one room, which no ad campaign can match.

How we would work on PEI

On a small island, accuracy beats volume. We would make sure every counter is correct through branch and counter local SEO, tighten the catalogue for heat pump parts and accessories, and keep paid campaigns small and precise. Rep visits and training events then carry the relationship. See all of Atlantic Canada on our areas page, or call, text or email us from contact.

Frequently asked questions

Is PEI big enough for dedicated supplier marketing?

Yes, if the plan is sized to the market. PEI has a small number of contractors, so the work is less about ad volume and more about accurate branch listings, a strong catalogue and rep relationships.

Are efficiencyPEI heat pump rebates still open?

As of October 2026, the residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026, and the free heat pump program page said applications were closed. Check efficiencyPEI before referencing any program.

What licences do PEI contractor buyers hold?

Plumbing companies need a Plumbing Contractor's Licence, boiler and pressure vessel work needs a Mechanical Contractor Licence, and propane servicing needs an LP Gas Personnel Licence. Those groups are natural targets.

Are you a PEI contractor?

No. We are a marketing and consulting service for suppliers and manufacturers, and we do not install, repair or service anything.
